View Full Version : GFX Cards
Lo Guys
Thinking of getting 2 of these
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-180-SP
Any 1 got any input on them ??
Loads on different forums say they are great and for the price just 1 of the cards is above the nvidia GTX260 cards.
never realy gone for ATI bit might be time for a change.
Any input would be nice plz
Cheers
Ozzy :)
Very good bang4buck when you want to show off with 3Dmark scores..
Good enough for playing games though if you want to compare it to a Nvidia card same price-range it out-preforms the 260GTX. Now in Crossfire you'll have to buy a Crossfire-compatible MB to go with it. That will bring you around the same price as one 280GTX on a SLI MB with the option to go with that card in SLI-mode at some point in time.
I am thinking to buy a new rig myself, and looked at the pros and cons to go for those two cards in Crossfire too.
Something to read HERE. (http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/1481/1/sapphire_radeon_hd_4870_in_crossfire/index.html)
I made my choice though: 280GTX for now and another l8r.
Yeah, basically what Trieb said.
I got mine in the mail today but I can't really say much about it yet. I'm a bit underwhelmed so far, but maybe I was just expecting too much.
Sold my GTS512 and only had to add an extra 100 euros to get this card, the benchmarks I saw led me to believe performance was almost double that of a GTS512 in ETQW.
But now when I play ETQW at high settings the CPU load peaks every 20 seconds or so (causing a really nasty stutter), I think I'm going to have to overclock my already blistering fast cpu (C2D E8400) a bit to get maximum performance out of the HD4870 (If it gets substantially better I'll be sure to post it here.)
If you plan on mainly playing ETQW with those cards, you might as well just only get one, because believe it or not performance actually gets (slightly) worse in crossfire mode (at resolutions under 2560*1600 anyway) though it might just be a driver issue.
ETQW benchmarks here: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3341&p=20 (scroll down a bit).
Thks guys.
I think they have sorted the drivers for Crossfire now [im sure i read some where].
And Trieb lucky enough my Mobo takes crossfire any way hehe [Asus]
Still not to sure about them yet, im going to put my insurance claim in very soon so i will wait and see what i am offered for my 2x8800 ultras if any thing .
Cheers
:)))))):)
You've lost me m8.....
Think you changed to a new MB then coz there is no way that those 2 defect 8800's ran in SLI on the same MB where you now like to run CF on.
As said its worth to go for that setup in CF, they costs half as much as one 280GTX and more performance out of a CF-MB isn't possible. The 4870 is the best of ATI today.... sure....you can wait for the 4870x2 and buy 2 of them, or even the X58 MB its all in the future. There is no way to keep up with the latest crap they produce as today's GFX/CPU/whatever is an oldie tomorrow.
If your MB supports CF...buy them...if not, or there is no MB yet, go for the 280GTX.
nvidea ftw Ozz m8 :p
i will spell it for you office m8

well having a fuck off plastering trowell dont make me a good plasterer! i would stick to the tetris m8 ;)>>>:
Wow, I just doubled my performance with the card (Radeon HD4870) in ETQW, I finally found out Everest and Fraps were decreasing my FPS substantially.
Everest makes it stutter every couple of seconds and just by having fraps on (not even recording) the framerate drops by 30%. Now at 1680*1050 with everything on high, the 4 top sliders in the middle and 4xAA I get 90+ fps (110 average) most of the time, it only dips under 60 once in a blue moon.
This thing fucking kicks ass!
I also had to tweak my ETQW config a bit.
These three lines in my autoexec really make the card shine:
com_unlockFPS 1
com_unlock_timingMethod 1
com_unlock_maxFPS 0
The only real drawback about the 4870 is how hot it gets, I can fucking bake a deep-fried pizza in my case and then some and I only have one 4870! So make sure the airflow in your case is nothing short of excellent before getting two of these and crossfiring them (unless you like the jet engine-like sound two of these cards make at 60%+ fanspeed).
On another note (well not really), while I was typing this I left ETQW running in the background and left my 4870 at 27% fanspeed by accident. Then I figured I'd just randomly check my GPU temp... when I saw it I almost had a fucking heartattack :0)', it was 98 degrees celcius. This is how hot these bastards will get if you turn your back on them for just a second, I hope I don't get any artifacts.
I'd recommend this card to anyone who's looking into buying a new card right now, for the price it's almost a steal!
Oh yeah and btw here are the rest of my specs (ETQW performance of the card is meaningless by itself)
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (3000 Mhz)
Gigabyte EP35C mobo (P35 chipset)
Corsair HX520W PSU

Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB SATAII 32MB cache hard drive
and of course... Radeon HD4870
Heres mine
