View Full Version : Connection issues
I have started to have ridiculous connection problems . They have only started in the last 2 or 3 days . I get stuttering in game and really it is mostly unplayable for me . I have updated PB, defragged , run a virus scan and ccleaner . I don't have issues with any other games . L4d is fine as is COD . I have attached a screenshot of my netgraph. At the time of taking that network usage in performance monitor was .04 % . I cannot work it out . Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I think its prob's with PB im also getting this problem and mikiisho and many others...
Hi Dr. as we talk lately i see you come in and out of games to often, if the problem persist i think you can try reinstalling game ( a know that´s painfully but what else .... ), otherwise run a netstat -a command in a dos box, to see what you have running in that moment and wich sockets you have open may be it helps you, or you find something that should not be there. Other tinhg are you doing some P2P programs like azureus, .... Tell you that coz when i used them next hour or so, even rebooting router i have issues (think the clients try to connect to my computer even the program is down and both computer and router reboot....
If all this fail, well aim for the eyes :))))))
See you m8
I made some improvement by changing net_clientprediction to 30 instead of 20 (20 is default) (20-100) . I knocked it back to 25 to see. I am not sure why it has made the packet loss go away . I still get some laggy moments but at least I can kill some of you again :D
Least I thought it had :( Happened again tongiht . No idea whats happening .
When an objective is done I lag also for about 4/5 sec. and especially in a vehicle.
Trace route to Rackage and find out how many hops you have to make to get that few blocks through London from your house to the server...lol.
1 42 ms 87 ms 99 ms BeBox.config [192.168.1.254]
2 8 ms 7 ms 7 ms 87-194-48-1.bethere.co.uk [87.194.48.1]
3 7 ms 7 ms 6 ms 10.1.2.222
4 6 ms 7 ms 7 ms linx1.rackage.com [195.66.225.8]
5 6 ms 6 ms 6 ms 193.93.45.36
There you go, work that out ? I think , maybe , my router is beginning to die. But actually I don't know.
Mine:
1 1 ms <1 ms 1 ms 192.168.1.254
2 21 ms 21 ms 20 ms 82-169-23-254.ip.telfort.nl [82.169.23.254]
3 23 ms 39 ms 22 ms ae10.524.ibr1.asd-nh.ip.telfort.nl [195.240.64.33]
4 22 ms 22 ms 22 ms ae2.ams20.ip4.tinet.net [77.67.64.1]
5 41 ms 41 ms 41 ms xe-8-0-0.lon20.ip4.tinet.net [89.149.185.69]
6 31 ms 30 ms 30 ms rackage-gw.ip4.tinet.net [213.200.79.246]
7 31 ms 31 ms 30 ms 193.93.45.36
Router could be the case m8.
Well mines fine but i couldnt tell you all about them numbers u putting havnt a clue lol i only lag once or twice a game when violater is going and all strogg veicals firing at mcp lol and im in middle of it....
Well, each line represents "a hop" . The first lint to your gateway (router) , then each subsequent server you use till you get to the game server . The times are the ping in milliseconds. The ping to your router (first line) should be near instantaneous , ie. < 1 ms where mine is reporting much higher numbers .
----> 1 42 ms 87 ms 99 ms BeBox.config [192.168.1.254] , it should read
----> 1 1ms <1ms BeBox.config [192.168.1.254] much like Trieb's .
However a bit of digging on google reveals that the Thompson router my ISP uses , the BeBox is prone to misreporting that first step timings . If I ping it's ip address (192.168.1.254) it shows normal timings of 1ms <1ms .
If you want to do a trace route yourself, you go to command prompt and type the following : tracert 193.93.45.36 (for OMS server ) . You can put in any IP address but leave the port out . From it you can see how many hops there are to the server and if any a slowing things down .
I raised a ticket with My isp as follows :
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Connection is via 2 cat6 cables from router to x 2 lan ports on nvidia 680i motherboard , teamed . The router is plugged directly into BT face plate via dsl filter . I have unteamed the connection, changed dsl filter , uninstalled and reinstalled ETQW game and punkbuster . None of this makes any difference .
I have quad 6600 , ati 4870 , 2 gb memory , vista 32 bit. I have not made any changes save for routine microsoft updates and things like flash player .I have also got an XP install which wasn't changed at all and tried that with same result . My computer is more than adequate to run the Game . Network usage during online play is about 0.4 % . CPU usage about 60 % tops . Plenty of memory left free . As i say, the game performs fine in offline mode . I have eset firewall . I have virus .checked, malware checked, all clean . I have defragged even tho I personally think defragging is a waste of time to see if it helped , but it didn't .I have turned off eset and anyhting else that might interfere to no avail. The strange thing is it was all fine before about two weeks ago .
This issue started about 2 weeks ago where before is was nigh on perfect . If I play offline there is no lag . Online , lagometer shows packet loss. I have checked speedtests, ping tests , qos tests and all are fine .
I have used the DMT tool and that is fine .

Above is link to a pic of my lagometer.(if you are interested ) Top line is predicted frames ahead or behind and bottom line is packet loss, which I have not had before 2 weeks ago .It has me perplexed and I was hoping you guys might have some insight or magic fix :) Don't know if you needed all that info but you got it anyway .
I have since found out that Thompson routers have a habit of misreporting the ping to router .
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
There were a couple of short emails before that but the main information is in the wall of text above :) I had done a couple of things before that like powering off and on the router and resetting it etc .Since that , I have forwarded all the ports etqw uses and my connection has settled . I don't know if that was the fix or it just sorted itself out . Who knows . Happy fragging .
Some useful info/tools
DMT tool (http://dmt.mhilfe.de/) for connection analysis and altering some settings on router. Don't alter things unless you know what you are doing .
PortForward.com (http://portforward.com/)is great for info on how to forward ports on your router and what ports to forward for games etc .
Ping test (http://www.pingtest.net/) to test pings and jitter for your connection .
Speedtest (http://www.speedtest.net/) to test up/down speeds
Quality of Service (http://www.qostest.com/) (QoS) detailed testing . Very detailed stuff here . This benchmarking tool is targeted at end hosts (consumers) to assist them to quantify their Internet Quality of Service Experience by focusing on broad Internet services performance rather than end-to-end statistics . Read more about it at the site itself .
TCP optimizer (http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php) a tool for tweaking things. Again , read more about it at their site .
Your ISP forums are a good place to start trouble shooting as someone is bound to have already posted the same problem as you :) They can also be a source of some good information if you dig a little. As with most forums though, you have to look past the whine/BS threads .
Hope someone gets something from the above geekery . happy Christmas to all !
Well ermmm would be usful to me if i used my router which i dont i put my lag down to my ddr 2 2 gig ram its only like 667 mhz :/ not the fastest in the world
