Zombies!
Valve's zombiefest has been going on for a year and a half now, and if you haven't tried either title here's a wee review..
The basic concept of both games is very simple - survive hordes of zombies, who are not your slow lumbering kind, but very fast and aggressive. The zombies are actually very weak, but fighting a horde of over 50 compensates for how easily they fly apart. Also, both games feature 'special' zombies, who have a range of abilities, which both complement the common zombies and the other specials.
After playing it for a few hours one thing will stand out - if you don't support each other as a team, you will all be toast. And this is the key to these games appeal - teamwork really counts. You can all revive each other (but it takes time), and in the second instalment you can even bring your teammates back from the dead, but trying to stay alive as a team while moving forward (or camping a good spot in survival) is key.
The second game expanded on the 1st by adding new specials, better graphics, and melee weapons, but in all honesty I don't think it added that much to the gameplay - I would even go as far suggesting the atmosphere is better in the first, as it's all set at night. But still, beating zombies to death with a guitar has its merits ;)
My biggest gripe with both games would be that joining a random server with people you don't know can be incredibly frustrating, as it only takes one rambo to ruin it for all four players. But playing for fun with a few friends (and beer!) can be great fun - when things go wrong comms can become very entertaining :D
Anyway, if any of you decide to give it a shot, let me know and I'll try and help ;)
